Becoming a cabin crew member is more than looking the part. It takes preparation, professionalism, confidence, communication skills, and the ability to meet an airline’s specific requirements.

In a recent Thursdays with IPAMS livestream, Ms. Stephanie, Operations Administrator of IPAMS, shared practical advice for aspiring cabin crew members based on her extensive experience in aviation recruitment.

With more than 14 years in overseas recruitment and experience handling Middle East aviation and hospitality roles, Ms. Stephanie has been involved in numerous airline recruitment events and the deployment of nearly 3,000 cabin crew members.

Her message to aspiring applicants was clear: Preparation matters.

Don’t Show Up Unprepared

Walking into a recruitment event without knowing what to expect can affect your confidence and performance.

Ms. Stephanie encouraged applicants to research the airline, understand the position they are applying for, and prepare the necessary documents before attending a recruitment event.

Being prepared also means knowing your own qualifications and being ready to discuss your experience, skills, and career goals.

Don’t Ignore the Entry Requirements

Every airline has its own official qualifications and recruitment criteria. Applicants should carefully check these requirements before attending an assessment.

Physical requirements may include height and arm-reach tests, among other criteria. Meeting the requirements is an important first step before proceeding with the recruitment process.

Don’t Neglect Your Communication Skills

Cabin crew members interact with passengers from different backgrounds, so clear and effective communication is essential.

Ms. Stephanie reminded applicants that English communication skills matter—not simply because of grammar, but because cabin crew need to communicate instructions, assist passengers, and handle situations professionally and confidently.

Don’t Compromise on Grooming

For cabin crew applicants, grooming is part of presenting a professional image.

Applicants should aim for a polished and appropriate appearance. This includes properly styled hair and makeup, suitable interview attire, and comfortable yet professional shoes.

Ms. Stephanie also advised applicants to be mindful of the timing of cosmetic or dental procedures. Major changes or procedures immediately before a recruitment event may not be the best approach.

Don’t Fake Your Persona

One common mistake is trying too hard to give recruiters the “perfect” answer or personality.

Ms. Stephanie encouraged applicants to be authentic. Preparation is important, but applicants should still allow their genuine personality and communication style to come through.

Recruiters can tell when an applicant is simply memorizing answers or trying to be someone they are not.

Don’t Display a Negative Attitude

Professionalism does not stop once the interview begins.

From the moment applicants arrive at a recruitment event, their attitude, behavior, and interactions can contribute to the overall impression they make.

Being respectful, courteous, patient, and professional throughout the recruitment process is essential.

For aspiring cabin crew members, getting ready for an opportunity starts long before the interview.

Know the requirements. Research the employer. Prepare your documents. Practice your communication skills. Dress appropriately. And most importantly, be yourself while maintaining a professional attitude.
